On November 23 of 1887,William Henry Pratt was born.Still,Mr. Pratt is best known and remembered by his artistic name:Boris Karloff.
As a celebration of the man and his career,there's this blogathon that I've been mentioning since some weeks ago...and of course,there's this illo I made.

My first contact with classic cinema monsters was through the movies of El Santo.My favorite when I was younger and brattier was Santo & Blue Demon vs Los Monstruos,were the titular luchadores fought against the Wolfman,a Dracula facsimile in a top hat,the Cyclops (the Mexican cheap substitute of the Gill-man),the Mummy and a Frankenstein monster with bad hair and an ugly moustache (for reference,there's a video of that movie at Dailymotion).
That movie made me interested on the Universal Monsters and so I watched the original movies only to find out that the creatures were even more cooler than I thought.And so I became a fan.Now,many of you out there already know that I'm partial to (were)wolves,but Karloff's Frankenstein is simply classic.You know,almost all other depictions of that monster are based upon Karloff's version in one way or another —and if that's not the case,it's very hard not trying to make a comparation (at least for me).

Anyway,something fun about those movies was the fact that they had this fun sense of community,this idea that all the monsters knew each other (well,they did because all were working for the same studios).Still they didn't show up together in many movies and so for this day I thought about drawing a team-up that would have been great to see —and very probably it also would have been an Oscar ® for an awesome double performance,dont you think?

So,Mr. Karloff,wherever you are,have a happy birthday and thanks for all the inspiration!

If you ask me,I'm not very sure about what I was trying to depict here.My first idea was visualizing a zombie queen of the voodoo kind.
Then I started thinking about goth angels and included the skeleton t-shirt,the wings and the aviator goggles.Suddenly I started missing the smell of cempasuchil flowers and had to include one.I have no explaination for the red latex glove.
Finally,when I was scanning the image,Creedence were playing on the radio and had a thought about including a full moon (and in fact,I kept the tune playing on loop while doing all the coloring).
Still,for such a chaotic train of thought I suppose the result ain't bad at all —but that's just my opinion,of course

This illo was made for this blog named Ilustrando Que Es Gerundio,which is about fortnightly drawing challenges —a random topic is chosen,then you have to draw something about it.The theme this time was Paris,as in the French city.
At first I thought drawing something about French thieves like Arsène Lupin or Fantomas but then my silly side imposed itself (as it usually does) and in the end it was the Pink Panther and the Inspector as you can see.
Oh swell,maybe next time then.

And here's another sketch I drew against the clock —or more exactly,while a tune was playing.

This was faster than my previous atempt at screencasting.But then again,I grew up with the TV set as my nanny and Popeye was one of the first characters I learned to draw.Ah,and for the record,he didn't make me like spinach.Guess there are battles even a powerful one-eyed sailor can't win.

And now,for something completely different...here's a little 3D experiment.You'll need red & blue glasses,with the red one over your left eye.

What you see here is the ofrenda (offering) I had in my house for today —it was Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) in case you didn't know.

A Hallowe'en Tune

So it's that time of the year again.But I'm not very sure...I think that tonight is Devil's Night and tomorrow is Halloween yet stores and supermakets around here have been selling Christmas decorations since last month.But I'll also admit that in my whacky mind,every day is like Halloween.Guess Einstein was right when he said that time is always relative.
Now,it's funny how the most popular Christmas tale is actually a ghost story.And Halloween is a good time for telling horror stories yet there's not a single tale that you can say is as iconic —and ironic— of the festivity as Charles Dickens story is.So here's Evie Scrooge and the fairies of Hallowe'en.Maybe I should have posted this until tomorrow but,hey,if we're keeping the logic of the story,Evie must be visited by the fairies tonight so she can wake up tomorrow and see it's still time for her to enjoy Halloween (then again,she can also sleep all through the weekend and wake up on Día de Muertos).

Have a fun and safe night —and if you don't wanna be visited by the Fairy of Hallowe'en Past Progressive or any other tense,send me all your spare choco bars.

The funny story behind this image is that I drew the sketch one morning on which for breakfast I had a ham sandwich with buffalo sauce of the Búfalo™ brand (→)
I always liked the logo of that sauce but then again the anatomy of buffalos —or bisons— has always fascinated me.In fact,when I was a kid I actually asked for one for Christmas (and all I got was a plushie rather than a living one).One of this days,when I become rich,very probably I'll buy me a whole herd.

About 1 million years ago I used to make these silly Xerox fanzines with comic strips,short articles and rants —blogs were not invented yet.And just for fun,I also used to include mock publicity ads.Usually I took old magazines and cut some random headlines,paste them up on paper sheets and then write and draw stuff.One of said ads was for a fictional recruiting campaign for joining the exorcist commandos —if you're curious,here behind the cut is the original image:

Anyway,after seeing that image I felt a bit guilty (and very embarrased) and thought the idea deserved a better execution,hence the propaganda poster I made this week.

In other news,I'll be participating in the Boris Karloff Blogathon.
This is going to be an online celebration and yup,I'm doing it mostly because he was/is/will be one of the many inspirations for the stuff I do.

A comissioned piece for a French client.It was a very fun piece to do,as I don't draw skull logos for biker clubs very often.
The client liked the image as it is,but looking at it again I think I should have made the eyes smaller for a more sinister look.Maybe next time then.

Now here's a very basic costume design yet one that works —even though it is purple and has striped briefs...only a really badass man would not be afraid to wear something like that in public.
Then again,no one has ever seen the Phantom's face and he lives in a cave in the middle of a lost jungle.Sometimes the logic behind classic mystery men is not as mysterious as it seems.

And here's a new image I made for the Custom 52 project.You can go to said website to see how the illo is part of a potential playing card.

In case you can't guess which fairy tale I used this time,well,it's The Little Match Girl.I know I said I would be doing only images of gothic fairy tales,but Hans Christian Andersen's stories are dark enough.In fact,many of his stories can be very depressing as almost all their protagonists don't live happily ever after and rather end up dead...okay,they die happily (!) but they die anyway.
Ah,and yes,in the original story the Little Match Girl does use exactly 5 matches before she gets granted her wish of staying with her granny forever.So far it's the only fairy tale I can think of that uses the number 5 instead of the more common 3 or 7.

Dis-likes: Being chased by the police,woodsmen and/or hunters.
Super Powers: Ginny has an IQ of 250 and is not afraid of anything.Clutch is a werewolf —'nuff said.
Personality: Ginny may seem like a shy girl,but behind that appearance there's a really evil and wicked mind.She's very manipulative,yet she's with Clutch because she truly is in love with him (but won't admit it,at least in public).Clutch on the other hand is grumpy and stubborn but once you get to know him you'll find he's actually very kind.

(* I'm wondering if this concept deserves further development...any thoughts out there?)

I like movies.Unfortunately,not any kind of movies.This year,except for Pixar's Up,I have not watched a movie that I liked (I'm looking forward to Zombieland,Blood and Ponyo though,but very probably the late 2 won't even premiere here and I'll have to watch them until they're available on DVD).

Something I would like to watch would be something like this imaginary poster I made ↑
The plot would be quite simple:a story about narcos in the U.S./Mexico border that while digging a tunnel stumble upon a cave with a colony of velociraptors.Think From Dusk Till Dawn 1 & 2 meets Aliens 2 meets your favorite movie of swarms of nasty animals —because,yes,we're talking about lots of hungry velociraptors coming from the center of the Earth.
And then,just visualize this song over the final credits:

Now,that would be a badass movie,ah?

This was supposed to be just a warm-up sketch...but the I liked it enough for spicing it up with colors and even making it part of yet another design submitted to the Custom 52 project.

I guess I don't need to tell you which classic fairy tale character is this supposed to be.In the original version he was depicted rather as a smart trickster so I thought it would be a fun irony making him a strong combatant.

Yesterday was Condorito's 60th anniversary.Since I grew up reading his comic books I just had to commemorate the day in one way or another (as a matter of fact,Condorito was one of the key influences that made me start drawing).
If you're wondering why I drew him like a classic image of Mickey Mouse it's just because Condorito was created in Chile as a response to Walt Disney's Three Caballeros characters.So this is my way of making the full circle.Or something like that.
